Hansen Makes a Statement in the Gotham Stakes!

My post-Gotham Stakes article, that ran on HorseRacingNation.com/blogs/NYState, matches up with any that were written. Please enjoy.

After finishing second to Algorithms in the Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream on Jan. 29th, many felt that Hansen needed to make a statement in his next Derby prep race.  He did just that and more in the Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct. Hansen swept from off the pace to a three length victory.

There were questions about running on another wet track, about his stamina, and about his ability to deal with the 12 post position.  Trainer Michael Maker took the blinkers off Hansen for the first time and the result was a more relaxed racehorse. Instead of rushing to lead Hansen sat behind the early leader King and Crusade. The result pleased Maker, “More impressive, he lost all that ground and wasn’t rank behind horses and settled. Ramon said [on] his gallop out, he had to call the outriders to come and get him.”

Hansen who came into the race with the most earnings of the three-year olds on the Derby trail, with over $1,200,000 and qualifiying graded stake purses of $1,160,000, added another $240,000 to his bankroll.  Hansen was bet down to $.80-1 and paid $3.60 to win.

What started out as a rainy morning turned into a warm and sunny afternoon at Aqueduct. The presence of Hansen certainly helped the day become a huge success.  Attendance was up 16 percent on-track, betting was up 9.2 percent, and the all-source handle of $14,341,072 showed an upswing of 28.5%

Post race festivities centered on the namesake owner Dr. Kendall Hansen.  Dr. Hansen was dressed in a royal blue tee shirt with the words “The Great White Hope 05.05.12”. The letter o was replaced with a red rose.  The rose and the date, of course refer to the goal of the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. He has been in the spotlight recently when his request to dye the mane and tail of the near white horse, was denied by the NYRA stewards. Dr. Hansen said, “I considered outfitting the horse with a blue tail extension.”

Dr. Hansen was enjoying his time in the limelight, “It’s so fun to get interviewed and get attention.”  With a big smile he quipped, “Can you tell I like attention?”

Most of all he was delighted with his horse’s performance, “To see him relax and see him finish up strong, that’s really what I wanted. This is perfect. I’m a little bit more relaxed when he’s tucked in and just tracking another horse and just takes it easy.”

Dr. Hansen was also more than happy to talk about what’s next for his two-year champion. “I wish the timing was better for the Spiral [Turfway Park, G3, March 24]. I really want to run at my hometown track, and it’d be an odd circumstance where Mike [trainer Maker] says, ‘Gosh, we really have to run him in three weeks.’ That’s what I’d really like to do, but the Wood is a really famous race. A lot of history, and it’d be a real thrill to have a chance to win that. We don’t have to run again [before the Kentucky Derby]. We may make that decision, whatever is best for the horse. As long as everything stays on schedule, we’ll probably run him one more time. I think a mile and an eighth would be good for him to build up to a mile and a quarter.”

Todd Pletcher on the Verge of 3,000 Wins

Todd Pletcher heads into Saturday’s racing needing only one more winner to reach the 3,000 victory mark.  Pletcher began his training career as an assistant to Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas.  Pletcher took out his training license and went out on his own in December 1995.

His first winner, Majestic Number, came in February of 1996.  On Saturday Pletcher has horses entered in seven races at Gulfstream and two races at Aqueduct. Interestingly his entry in race 4 at Gulfstream is also named Majestic Number.  Race 4 is a seven furlong maiden special weight for three year-olds.  This Majestic Number is listed at 6-1 on the morning line after running fourth in his first start at the Florida track on January 5, 2012.  The Officer colt was bought for $45,000 at the Ocala March 2011 sale for two year-olds.  The first Majestic Number was a filly by Polish Numbers.

9) Gemologist – Last week unranked – Career – 3:3-0-0 $145,855 (25th $103,855). Since Gemologist has recorded his first workout, :39.88 for 3F at Palm Meadows, I have put him into the rankings.  The Pletcher trainee won the Kentucky Jockey Cup (G2) beating the Jonathan Sheppard horse, Ever So Lucky.

10) Hansen – Last week ranked 3. Career – 4: 3-1-0 $1,233,305 (1st $1,160,000).  He dropped in my rankings as other horses have turned in impressive performances or have stepped up their training. I will give the champion two year-old and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner another chance after his second place finish in the Holy Bull.  Fountain of Youth (G2) Feb. 26.

AndyScoggin’s Derby Top 10

The descriptions include possible next start for each horse and their grades stakes earnings with rank.  Currently $110,330 is required to make the top 20 of graded stakes earnings.

1) Union Rags – He was the best two year-old in 2011, and he has been training steadily for his return to the races. Fountain of Youth (G2) Feb. 26 and $830,000 (2)

2) Algorithms – His win in the Holy Bull (G3) was fast and impressive and earned a 98 BSF and as a math teacher I love the name.  Algorithm means “set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations”. $240,000 (9)

3) Hansen – I will give the champion two year-old and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner another chance after his second place finish in the Holy Bull.  Fountain of Youth (G2) Feb. 26 and $1,160,000 (1)

4) El Padrino – He earned a 100 BSF in his allowance win at Gulfstream. This Pletcher runner will have no trouble getting the Derby distance. $0

5) Out of Bounds – The winner of the Sham (G3) got an impressive 99 BSF in his second start. San Felipe (G2) Mar. 10 and $60,000 (37)

6) Liaison – This Baffert trainee had two great wins as a juvenile in the Cash Call (G1) and the Real Quiet.  Robert Lewis (G2) Feb. 4 and $375,000 (6)

7) Discreet Dancer – Another talented Pletcher trainee that has won both of his starts and impressed in his Jan. 7th allowance at Gulfstream. $0

8) Alpha – Let’s see how this one does in the Withers (G3) this weekend. Can he continue to improve off of his 85 BSF in the Count Fleet?  Withers Stake (G3) Feb. 4 and $60,000 (37)

9) Shared Property – Ran a pretty good race in the LeComte (G3) considering the outside post and wide trip.  He will need to do better in his next start. Risen Star (G2) Feb. 25 and $73,700 (32)

10) Ever So Lucky – I love the Sheppard/Leparoux connections. This Indian Charlie colt fired a sharp workout recently. Hutcheson Stakes (G2) Feb. 11 and $30,000

Stop Two on the New York Derby Trail – the G3 Withers

Here are a couple of paragraphs from my recent article at HorseRacingNation.com.

Saturday’s grade three Withers Stakes marks the second stop on the 2012 New York Derby Trail.  This year in New York there is $250,000 more of the Derby qualifying graded money available and the sequence of the races has been changed.

The Withers Stakes is named for David Dunham Withers, who was a businessman who made a fortune in the South prior to the Civil War.  He moved to the North where he owned and bred thoroughbreds from his 800 acre Brookdale Farm in Lincroft, NJ.  He was one of the founders of Jerome Park, an original member of the Jockey Club, and an owner of Monmouth Park.  The Withers was first run at old Jerome Park in 1874.  He actually won his namesake race in 1890, with his horse, King Eric.

Florida Sunshine Millions

Gulfstream Park hosts the Florida Sunshine Millions on Saturday, January 28.  Big name horses and $1.3 million of purses are featured in the six race series.  The undefeated four year-old filly Awesome Feather goes for her ninth victory in race five, the Florida Sunshine Millions Distaff.  Breeders’ Cup Sprint and Eclipse winner Musical Romance returns to the track in the race 6, the Filly and Mare Sprint. The fan favorite Mucho Macho Man, who ran in all three legs of the 2011 Triple Crown will try and get a win in the Classic, which is carded as race 10.

Race 5 – $300,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Distaff– I have to go with #4 Awesome Feather to continue her winning streak here. Trainer Chad Brown has done a masterful job with the Stronach runner that was originally purchased for $2,300,000.

Race 6 – $150,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint – I am going to try and beat Musical Romance as 6F does not seem to be her best distance. #1 It’s Me Mom has tremendous speed and could get loose on the lead here.  Twitter master @EJXD2 calls It’s Me Mom his best bet of this very busy weekend of racing. I will give the nod to #7 Beat the Blues. In twelve 6F starts this runner has gone 8-3-1.

Race 7 – $150,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Sprint – The race sets up for #7 Apriority to run down the pace setters and get the win.

Race 8 – $150,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf #5 Romacaca always runs a good race and has a G3 win.  She is training smartly for her return to the races.  She holds a class and Beyer Speed Figure edge on this field.  There are four horses that ran in the 2011 edition of this race including that year’s winner #7 Trip for A. J.

Race 9 – $150,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Turf – Again I will try and beat the favorite. 8-5 morning line  #5 Little Mike is in a race that seems to be at least 110 yards too long.  The Graham Motion runner #1 Slews Answer went :58-1 in a 5F turf workout and gets a rider change to Ramon Dominguez.

Race 10 – $400,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Classic –  #6 Mucho Macho Man is the likely favorite, but he needs to prove to me that he really wants to win a big race.  Thus, I will go with #3 Adios Charlie who returned to the races with a convincing win at Gulfstream Park, though the mile and eighth could be an issue for him.

The 50¢ pick 5 runs from races seven through eleven. Here is my modest $36 ticket: 1, 7 with 5 with 1, 3, 10 with 3, 5, 6, 7 with 3, 10, 11.
